Urban heat island of Freiburg
An animated visualization of the urban heat island in Freibourg.
In June of 2019, Dr. Andreas Christen and his students at the University of Freibourg mapped the urban heat island effect using their meteobike system.
The students in his course build these mobile temperature and humidity sensors, collect data by cycling along prescribed routes, and process the data as part of their studies in meteorology.
I built this simple tool for Dr. Christen and his students to visualize the different data they had collected during their measurement campaigns.
The visualization was shared widely on social media and was also covered in the local newspaper Die Badische Zeitung in a piece titled “Interaktive Karte zeigt, wo es in Freiburg am heißesten ist” (Interactive map shows where in Freibourg it is the hottest).
